The treatment provided at NSO is specialized in that we view an individual’s presentation from a brain-based perspective. Each individual receives treatment that is customized to his or her unique needs and the reason for referral.
When working with patient's and their family members, we strive to provide information about diagnosis and treatment in a straight forward manner. Helping individuals understand how changes in brain function impact everyday behavior and/or mood is our specialty. We provide recommendations and education with the goal of improving the individual's quality of life.
A neuropsychological evaluation is a way to assess how an individual’s brain is functioning. Tests given during an evaluation assess areas of cognitive functioning such as language, attention, memory, problems solving, and visual spatial abilities. Emotional functioning is also evaluated to assist with clarification regarding the impact of current emotional status on cognitive functioning. The tests are not invasive. Most of the tests will involve questions-and-answers, as well as working with materials on a table. Some tests will involve the use of a computer, and only basic computer skills are needed.
Information may be provided to educate individuals and/or their family members about their current symptom presentation, diagnosis, and treatment. Helpful information about “what to expect” given the individual’s diagnosis is provided.
Evaluations for ADHD and Autism are different than typical neuropsychological evaluations because cognitive testing is generally not very helpful in making these diagnoses.
Accordingly, these evaluations consist of an interview to ask about traits commonly associated with ADHD and/or Autism and questionnaire measures that will help quantify the breadth and intensity of these traits. You will also be asked about other things like sleep, mood, academic history, and medical history.
